Andrea Sanders and her friend Jessica was on their way to the mall one bright Saturday. While driving, Jessica was talking on the phone and didn't see the red light and slam head on to an SUV. Both die en route to the hospital. They were just sixteen years old.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the US Department of Transportation, 25 percent of all car accidents are due to text messaging or talking on the phone. Majority of those involved in the 40, 000 plus car accidents in a year are youngsters 15 to 24 years old. Because of this alarming statistics, more and more people are enjoined to practice road and automobile safety.

1. Seatbelts.

The simplest way to prevent car accidents is to buckle up. Most teenagers fail to wear this important car safety feature. Statistics show that more than 60 percent of teenagers who are involved in car accidents do not have their seatbelt on. Today, drivers are fined for not wearing seatbelts as well as the passengers. It has become mandatory to wear a seatbelt and this could spell the difference between life and death.

2. Cell phone Use

Drivers are advised not to use their cell phones while driving. Even hands-free talking has been confirmed to cause a large percentage of automobile accidents. If drivers really need to make a call, they are advised to park somewhere safe before using their phones. Phone features such as call redirecting or voice mails are suggested to be turned on when driving.

3. Maximize all the safety features of the vehicle

Airbags are one of the best safety features a car could have. Most recently, airbags can be deployed in the wheel and sides ensuring maximum protection for the driver and passenger. Some vehicles also have anti-lock braking systems and emergency brakes. Child safety seats are also becoming standard. Children weighing less than 20 lbs are required to be seated facing the rear while toddlers above this weight limit are required forward-facing seats. There are many manufacturers of child car seats today that use harness above the shoulders as well as the waist.

4. Well-maintained vehicle

This is the best way to ensure that drivers will have a safe driving experience. It is also mandatory for any vehicle to have a regular checkup to make sure that they are up to standards. It can also keep the car working well in any weather conditions. A quick automobile checkup before travelling includes:

o    Checking the tire pressure
o Signal lights
o Windshield wipers
o Oil Level
o    Brake fluid level

5. A clear head

The risks of car accidents can be reduced with drivers having clear and rational heads. Road rage has been an issue when it comes to driving. Drivers are advised to keep calm in situations when they are cut off in traffic. It is also best to stay a safe distance from other vehicles, especially large trucks in the highway. They are also advised to use signal lights when changing lanes and always check the rear view mirror at all times.
